How To Write A Testimonial For A Physical Therapist

It's Tuesday, and so you know what that ways: new #dptwiththecc mail! I feel like Fri'south post was a practiced "segway" into today's post, as ascertainment hours normally lead to at least one recommendation letter. Like the previous mail service, I am going to give a full general overview of recommendation letters, share my personal feel, & share a few tips!

What is a recommendation letter?

A letter of recommendation (LOR)/reference is written by someone who can vouch for your skills, achievements, work, and/or academic operation. They are recommending you for the DPT program, and stating that they are confident that you volition succeed as a student and eventually as a physical therapist.

Recommendation alphabetic character requirements (number and evaluators) vary across DPT programs, so cheque with your prospective programs to make sure you receive the correct types. Common evaluator types include:

  • Concrete Therapists (almost programs will crave a letter from at least one that you've adumbral)
  • Concrete Therapy Assistants
  • Advisors
  • Professors/Teaching Assistants
  • Employers/Supervisors
  • Co-workers
  • Healthcare Professionals
  • Politicians
  • Mentors

PTCAS Reference Process

For PTCAS applications, y'all can enter upwards to 4 evaluators, and there are 2 parts to the reference process. For function 1, the evaluator responds to the following questions through PTCAS:

  • How long have you known the bidder?
  • How well do you know the bidder?
  • Select the function that all-time describes your principal interaction with the bidder.
  • If you selected "Instructor/Professor" to a higher place, listing all courses in which you accept had the applicant.
  • Approximately how many references practise you submit on behalf of concrete therapy applicants each year?
  • Are you a licensed concrete therapist?
  • If you are a physical therapist, please bespeak the physical therapy establishment from which you graduated.
  • If you are a concrete therapist, please indicate the state in which you are licensed.
  • If you are a physical therapist, please enter your PT licensure number.
  • Evaluation Ratings (5 = Excellent, 1 = Poor)
  • Overall Recommendation (select one)

For part 2, the evaluator uploads a letter of recommendation (that they personally write on institutional/organizational letterhead) via PTCAS.

Earlier y'all submit the reference request through PTCAS, you lot are required to betoken whether or not you want to waive your right to audit or review the letter. Programs may view references as more honest if you waive your right to come across them. More information nearly this is on the PTCAS site.

My Experience

For my program, I had to have i recommendation letter of the alphabet from a professor, i from a physical therapist I adumbral, and another from a person of my choice. I ended upwardly having 2 letters from DPT alums of my program, + a alphabetic character from my favorite professor, who was also the dean of my major'due south undergraduate studies. I believe having recommendation letters from program graduates made me more than "credible". Of grade, every programme values the opinions of its past students, so it was a skilful move to have ii alums recommending me for the plan.

I contacted my evaluators in advance to ostend that they would be willing to write me a letter of the alphabet. This is of import, because you lot want to give your evaluators enough time to really write good messages. Letting the evaluator know in advance allows them to think about what they desire to say, + possibly even start on the letter early. As soon equally the awarding bike opened, I emailed my evaluators to let them know that I was sending the reference asking through PTCAS. I also permit them know my programme's deadline. In this email, I included my resume, my PTCAS essay, and my plan'south supplemental essays, then that my evaluators had about of my accomplishments and experiences right in front of them.

General Tips

  • Request letters of recommendation EARLY! You don't desire a rushed letter, then be proactive, and don't wait till the terminal minute to inquire.
  • Only request letters of recommendation from evaluators that you believe will speak highly of yous (obviously!). The worst thing you could do is have a negative recommendation letter, then be sure that you have formed a good relationship with the evaluator. Don't only inquire anyone for a alphabetic character. For example, if you weren't that circumspect during i of your shadowing experiences, it would probably exist best to avoid asking whatsoever of the therapists from that setting to write you a alphabetic character.
  • When asking for the recommendation, make sure that y'all specify that you want a stiff and personalized letter. A generic alphabetic character is almost every bit bad a negative letter, so make sure you lot are upfront virtually what you desire from the evaluator. These letters could definitely make or intermission your PT application, and y'all desire your evaluators to present you lot in a positive light. If there are any skills, qualities, or accomplishments yous want them to highlight, let them know! This is about y'all, so do any you lot tin can to make sure that they will write yous a great alphabetic character! I would make certain to at least send them your resume or curriculum vitae (CV), and also let them know how you decided that you lot wanted to become a PT, + your future career goals.
  • Keep the contact information of the people you remember you lot'd desire to write you lot a recommendation letter of the alphabet, as you will have to somewhen enter this information into PTCAS.
  • Endeavour to accept someone continued to the DPT programme write you lot a recommendation letter (graduates, faculty, etc.) if possible.
  • Take patience, but don't be afraid to remind your evaluators if they forget to complete your recommendation letter. They accept lives every bit well (+ are probably actually busy), and sometimes things happen!

I hope that this post was helpful! On Friday, I will tackle the GRE, so I hope you lot come back to check that out! Make sure that yous are on my mailing list (y'all can sign up below) so that you lot never miss a mail service!

Thanks for reading, and I am grateful for everyone that has been keeping up with this serial!
